Resumen

El Alto se ha consolidado en la región andina como uno de los epicentros de la industria musical de la cumbia chicha/sureña. Esto gracias a la prevalencia de infraestructuras sociales, físicas y económicas que sostienen este mercado musical y propician su articulación tanto con localidades aledañas a esta ciudad como con otras regiones. Esto, además, en el marco de un calendario festivo extenso. En este contexto, la cumbia chicha/sureña —su sonoridad, sus letras, las performances que la acompañan y su representación visual— nos abre paso a un análisis que impulsa a cuestionar y redefinir las limitaciones de la teoría al momento de conceptualizar las estéticas andina, chicha, neoandina y chola. Con este fin, el artículo analiza las estéticas ‘chicha’ asociadas a la cumbia chicha/sureña que se toca y se produce en la ciudad de El Alto. Estas se expresan ampliamente en la moda, en los diseños gráficos, en el arte, en los videoclips y en las performances de las distintas agrupaciones que las interpretan. Por lo anterior, propongo examinar la ‘chicha’ con un enfoque metodológico cualitativo, centrado en las representaciones visuales y la puesta en escena de este estilo musical. Vemos, entonces, que en El Alto ‘lo chicha’ no es solo música, sino, y sobre todo, una forma de habitar la ciudad.
