Abstract

Many words agglomerate when talking about a place called Senkata, located in El Alto, infinite city. Among iconic images of cholets, stories of social struggle, Alasitas fair and many minibuses on the horizon, there is the workshop of the plastic artist Mario Coarite. It is worthwhile to look at his work and articulate an art critique of his most recent exhibition at El Faro Gallery entitled “Marcas de sol en cuerpos de barro” [Sun marks on mud bodies]. Immersing ourselves in Coarite's painting leads us to discuss Alteño perceptions of modernity, which will be complemented by an interview with the artist at his studio in Senkata. The particular gaze on the city, a characteristic concern of twentieth century modern artists, is activated in El Alto through the eyes of this young artist in contemporary Bolivia. This dimensional relationship takes shape in Senkata, leading us to think of connections with global art.
