Churata and the Indigenist Narrative. From Orthodox Indigenism to Metaindigenism
Marco Thomas Bosshard
Abstract
The present article analyses several indigenist texts by Gamaliel Churata ("El gamonal", "Tojjras" y El pez de oro), comparing these with themes in indigenist fiction written by authors such as Alcides Arguedas, Jorge Icaza, Ciro Alegría and José María Arguedas. It observes that Churata’s writing gives expression to a type of meta-indigenism that transcends orthodox indigenisms before these had been established.
